In the technical settings, you can choose how and where the text should be checked for grammar. The settings have changed with version 25.7.

Settings since version 25.7:

• Use local computer for text checking: Spelling, grammar, and style checks are performed on the local computer. The text to be checked is not transferred to an external computer over the network.
  • Use only one core: Only one CPU core is used. Sentence-related and text-related checks are performed sequentially (default setting to avoid excessive load on the computer's CPU).
  • Use two cores (for sentence check and text check): One core is used for sentence-related and one core for text-related checks. Both types of checks are performed in parallel.
  • Use more than one core: Sentence-related and text-related checks are performed in parallel. As many CPU cores as possible are used. This setting generally places a high load on the computer and is therefore not recommended if other activities (e.g., continuing to work on the document) are also being performed on the computer.
  • Ngram data directory: Here you can enter a directory of ngram files, which can be used to find frequently confused data pairs. The data to be installed locally is very extensive. The "Help" button provides assistance with functionality and downloading.
• Use remote server to check text: The text is transferred to an external server and checked there. This saves processing time on the local computer. Check the external computer's privacy policy.
  • Use default LanguageTool server: This setting transfers the text checking to the LanguageTool GmbH standard server (no further information is required).
  • Use premium account: LanguageTool GmbH provides a premium service that includes additional premium features. This setting allows access to this service. Access is subject to a fee. A valid username and a valid API key must be entered for access.
  • Use other server: If this function is selected and a corresponding address is selected, the specified server will be used. This setting is particularly useful for private, corporate, or government networks. To run your own LanguageTool server without having to send the data to an external address. (Note: The address must be specified without the "/v2" at the end.)
• Paragraph check mode: The text is only checked paragraph by paragraph. Checks across paragraph boundaries are not supported. Checks are always performed in single CPU core mode (Note: The use of external servers is also possible in this mode).
• Save Cache to file: The cache created during the check process is temporarily stored on the computer for later use. This significantly speeds up the check, especially with larger files, since only possibly changed text passages need to be checked again. Disabling this setting is not recommended.

Settings before version 25.7:

• Use only one core: Only one CPU core is used (standard setting, so as not to place too much load on the computer's CPU)
• Use more than one core: As many CPU cores as possible are used. This setting usually puts too much load on the computer and is therefore not recommended if other activities (e.g. continuing to work on the document) are to be carried out on the computer.
• Use remote server to check text: This setting transfers the text checking to a server over the network. If none of the following functions are selected, the check is carried out on the LanguageTool GmbH standard server.
  • Use server: If this function is selected and a corresponding address is selected, the specified server is used instead of the standard server. This setting is particularly interesting for private, company or government networks. To operate your own LanguageTool server without having to send the data to an external server.
    Note: The address must be specified without "/v2" at the end.
  • Use premium account: LanguageTool GmbH provides a premium service that contains additional premium features. This setting can be used to access this service. The username and API key must be entered for access.
• Save Cache to file: The cache created during the checking process is cached on the computer for later use. This accelerates the checking process enormously, especially for larger files, as only text passages that have been changed need to be checked again. Deactivating this setting is not recommended.
• Ngram data directory: A directory for n-gram files can be entered here, which can be used to find frequently confused data pairs. The data to be installed locally is very extensive. The "Help" button provides assistance on how it works and how to download it.
